Design Rationale
Concept and Inspiration
The logo Icon was meant to imitate an emblematic design. The intention behind this choice was to imply a sturdy foundation in tonsorial artistry. This imagery elicits thoughts of artistic guilds in countries like the UK and the deep knowledge and skill association with such an entity implies. This helps to communicate the luxurious nature of the business and their services.
Symbolism
The criss-cross four quadrant style inside the emblem is a common stylistic trend within the Hipster movement. This design element will help catch the attention of the business' target audience and further communicate the type of business being promoted, as the Hipster movement and style has many artisanal associations.
Color Palette
The color palette started with a luxurious deep red as the primary brand color. I selected a lighter red to serve as a secondary base tone. To introduce contrast and further communicate the brand's high end nature I added a matte golden complimentary tone. The final 'white' tone included in the palette is actually a slightly red tinted off-white to avoid color bleed when the colors are used with one another (particularly in an additive media such as a digital screen) as red has a tendency to do when put directly on a white background or vice versa.
Typography
The primary font chosen is 'Righteous' this font is sans serif, lending it well
to a modern logo aesthetic. It also features certain letters that look like they
have snipped edges, giving them a sharp, pointed appearance. The vertical line in
the letter 'a' in Saint is an example of this. I felt that this feature worked well
in the context of a barber shop while maintaining a crisp, clean, and unique appearance.
The paired font, 'Dosis' Is also a sans serif font, but stands alone from the primary
font in that it is narrow and tall. I felt that this feature helped it to still be
clear and legible while being less obvious, and thus complimenting, the primary font.
Conclusion
The final logo design serves to communicate Saint's Barbershop's luxury service and the experience they provide, while being a simple logo that will be easy to use on signage, merchandise, stationary, and advertisement. It accomplishes this through iconography, typography and color. These various elements allow the branding to be identifiable in any medium.
